Robert Pedersen: "toothpick in an iceberg.wav" (22KB)
Review: This bit is much easier to find and appreciate than a needle in a haystack. as it is a custom bit though, it is much more rare to unearth such a gem for one's listening pleasure. I think that Robert must have been conspiring with James (Whitman) about submitting bits with a "tooth" theme as this glistening and droney iciclet also references the pearly whites. This bit sounds very pure and electronically generated - no organic plaque here. Even timbrally speaking, any possible traces of cavities have been magically erased during mixdown before they can ever form in the minds of laptop muzak performers. This is probably why I suspect a hint of clinical dentistry behind this bit's operation.
This bit has a bit of programmatic progression as there is certainly a linear chain of notes happening but the progression is compact enough for most listeners to overlook unless they are looping it using winamp or some other wavefile player. This is one totally cool bit. I am not sure if this is a placebo effect happening in my mind but I swear this bit reminds me of Alec Empire's "Low On Ice (The Iceland Sessions)" [Mille Plateaux, 1995]. Perhaps we are hearing a tribute frozen in time? (Jeremy)
